The Tianning Temple is located to the west of Xiaozhaqiao and north of Dazhaqiao outside the west gate of the old city of Haiyan County, on the north side of the Shengqiao River. In history, the Tianning Temple covers an area of more than ninety mu. It is said that there are 5,480 halls and monk’s quarters. Surrounded by rivers on all sides, it is secluded in one place and connected by boats. In 1226, the second year of Baoqing during the reign of Emperor Lizong of the Southern Song Dynasty, the Shengqiao was built. In 1345, the fifth year of Zhizheng during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Yuan Dynasty, the Tianning Temple Bridge (i.e., Dazhaqiao) was built, and then the Ying’en Bridge (i.e., Zhaqiao) was successively built. The Tianning Temple has a long history and a large scale. In its prosperous times, there are dozens of monks. The morning bell, evening drum, wooden fish and Buddhist chanting, and the light of incense and candles never stop all year round.
