Tianyou Peak is located on the north side of the Liuqu Stream in the Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area, at the heart of the scenic spot. It is extremely famous, and Tianyou Peak is a must-visit place for anyone touring the waters of Wuyi. Here, you can appreciate the magnificent view of the Jiuqu Stream encircling Wuyi Mountain from various perspectives. Tianyou Peak is best visited in the morning, especially after rain, as the chances of seeing a sea of clouds are higher at this time.
The origin of its name is because when there is a sea of clouds, one feels as if they are in a fairyland, wandering in the heavenly palace, hence the name ‘Tianyou’. Tianyou Peak is divided into upper and lower sections, with the upper section known as Shang Tianyou, located to the left of the Yilan Pavilion; the lower section, Xia Tianyou, is along the Huma Stream. The Yilan Pavilion of Shang Tianyou, perched on the edge of a cliff, is an excellent platform for viewing the Wuyi landscape. From here, one can gaze out and take in the entirety of Wuyi’s mountains and waters. Most visitors prefer to proceed to the Chadong area to climb the main path, which takes about one and a half hours to ascend and descend. For those who enjoy a challenge, there is also a path from Jiesun Peak to Shang Tianyou, which is steeper and more time-consuming. Visitors can decide whether to climb to the summit based on their physical strength. If climbing becomes too difficult, one can return the same way from Banshan Pavilion, as the path becomes steep after that point. There are wax figures at the summit’s Tianyou Pavilion, where a dance party was once held, but the quality is average. There are simple meals and drinks for sale at the summit, but they are expensive and the taste is average, so it is recommended to bring your own food. After reaching the summit, there is no need to return the same way; there are several paths behind the mountain, through a tranquil forest, offering a unique experience. Along the way, there are numerous cliff inscriptions from different dynasties. When you reach the Jiuqu Stream at the foot of the mountain, don’t forget to look back at the Shibai Rock under Tianyou Mountain, which is a significant rock in the Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area. The entire area is open all year round and throughout the day.
