The functional spaces of Times Art Museum are scattered across various floors of a typical community residential building, creating an interventional structure that directly intersects with living and residential spaces. The museum’s entrance on the ground floor faces the street and is equipped with a bookstore, café, and art shop. The lobby space can host a variety of public events. The office area on the fourteenth floor is transformed from three residential units, with a dedicated elevator passing through the residential building to reach the exhibition hall on the nineteenth floor. The terrace and two glass exhibition halls overlook the urban landscape of northern Guangzhou. The top of the community residential building directly becomes part of the visual elements of the exhibition wall. The mezzanine of the exhibition hall is an open reading space for the public, and the underground floor is used for the museum’s archives.
Times Art Museum invites artists to engage in open residency creation, breaking the convention of art museums only presenting completed works. It introduces the creative process of artists and allows for zero-distance communication between the audience and the artists. On one hand, the museum encourages artists to step out of their studios, providing an environment and resources within the museum to fund, assist in implementing, and document art projects, thus facilitating the completion of exploratory and thoughtful art pieces. On the other hand, by combining communities and venues inside and outside the museum, it exposes the audience to the artists’ thoughts and the process of creating their works through exhibitions, lectures, discussions, screenings, and workshops. The open studio aims to create a cyclical ecosystem from artist to artwork to museum to audience and back to the artist, providing an experimental platform for artists to display and discuss their works and exploring the relationship between the museum and the community and its residents through individual projects.
