The Tomb of Fu Hao, also known as No. 5 Tomb at Yinxu, is located near the ruins of ancestral temples and palaces at Yinxu. It is a well-preserved tomb of a member of the Shang dynasty royal family discovered since the scientific excavation of Yinxu. This is a vertical pit tomb. The opening of the tomb is 5.6 meters long, 4 meters wide, and about 8 meters deep. The area is not large, only more than 20 square meters.
However, the funerary objects are extremely rich. A total of 1,928 cultural relics of different textures such as bronze wares, jade wares, gem wares, and ivory wares have been unearthed. There is a memorial hall on the tomb which is called ‘Mother Xin Zong’ in oracle bone inscriptions. According to the stratigraphic relationship of this tomb and the inscription of ‘Fu Hao’ on most bronze wares, archaeologists have identified the owner of the tomb as Fu Hao, the spouse of King Wu Ding of the Shang dynasty. The white marble statue in front of the memorial hall of Fu Hao is the image of Fu Hao created according to relevant materials. Wearing strong armor and holding sharp weapons, with piercing eyes, she holds a large bronze battle axe with dragon patterns, weighing 8.5 kilograms. She is truly the earliest female general in China, valiant and majestic. Another bronze battle axe with tiger patterns weighs as much as 9 kilograms, showing that she has extraordinary martial arts skills. In ancient times, the battle axe was a symbol of kingship. This also shows that Fu Hao had a very high status and was highly respected during the Shang dynasty. Opening hours: Open all year round and all day.
