Tongji Bridge has a long historical significance in Foshan. It is one of the earliest large wooden bridges built in Foshan. According to expert research, in the early stage, the bridge was a wooden pedestrian bridge funded by villagers. Later, Foshan’s roads were expanded many times. The river under Tongji Bridge was changed into a covered ditch, and the bridge deck was changed into a main road. There is no trace of a ‘bridge’ in this area anymore.

The proverb ‘Walking through Tongji Bridge, no troubles’ is well-known in Foshan. It means that by walking through ‘Tongji Bridge’, there will be no troubles, sorrows, and everything will go smoothly. This folk activity of ‘walking through Tongji Bridge’ embodies the beautiful wishes of Foshan people. From 23:00 on the 15th day of the first lunar month every year (starting from midnight on the 16th), to before 23:00 on the 16th (before midnight on the 17th), without anyone organizing it, Foshan is empty of people.

For a common hope, people walk on the same bridge. Some people from towns and villages in Nanhai, Sanshui, Gaoming, and Shunde nearby also come to participate in the ‘Tongji Bridge Walk’. This custom has started since the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Every family will bring the old and the young. From early morning to nightfall, holding windmills, shaking wind chimes, and carrying lettuce, they walk through Tongji Bridge from north to south in a mighty way.

This has continued for more than 400 years. Opening hours: Open all year round, 24 hours a day.
