Tongjiang Academy was founded by Fang Zhuo, the eighth-generation grandson of Fang Gan, a poet in the late Tang Dynasty, from 1165 to 1173 AD. Since his ancestor Fang Gan was from Tonglu, it is named ‘Tongjiang’. In 1156, when Zhu Xi came to Xianju, he brought his son (Zhu Ye) to Potan for inspection and lectures, making it famous in the south of the Yangtze River and known as the ‘No. 1 academy in the south of the Yangtze River’. At that time, the academy had not been built, so lectures could only be held in the Fang family’s free school.
Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 16:00.
