In the Xianyan Scenic Area, beside Meiyu Pool, there is a peculiar cave called Tongxuan Cave. At first glance, it seems not very deep and there seems to be no way out. In fact, this cave is not only deep and secluded, but also has three exits. One leads around a huge rock on the east side of the cave to the side of Meiyu Pool. Another circles around the rock pillar on the west side of the cave and loops to the southwest of the cave. There is an opening like a skylight. With a little effort, one can climb up and the Qingting suddenly appears in front of one’s eyes. These two exits can be called ‘open paths’. There is also a ‘hidden path’. Without a guide or instructions, it may be very difficult to find. That is, on the right side of a protruding rock wall in the northwest of the cave. It takes a lot of effort to climb up. The exit is at the entrance of Guanyin Cave in the middle of the southern cliff of Meiyu Pool. This ‘hidden’ path is suitable for tourists who like adventure and excitement to try. Tongxuan Cave is really no less than a mysterious little maze. Tongxuan Cave is a rock cave. It is a natural stone cave formed by the collapse of mountain rocks in geological ages. Legend has it that when Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Immortals, came to visit, he took a fancy to this feature of the cave. He once used the rock as his bed and the water of Meiyu Pool as his food and lived here for a long time. And Zhang Guolao was once given the title ‘Mr. Tongxuan’ by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. This may be another origin of the name of Tongxuan Cave.
