In 1914, Beijing began to plan the construction of tramways. In 1924, the first tramway line was completed, with Qianmen and Xizhimen as the starting and ending points. It is 9 kilometers in length. A total of ten trams run back and forth. Since then, tramways have gradually developed in urban areas and become one of the important public transportation means in Beijing at that time. Tramways are commonly known as ‘trolley cars’ because the pantograph on the top of their carriages obtains power by friction with the power grid erected in the air.
They are also called ‘clang clang cars’ because the way the driver sounds the whistle is by stepping on a copper bell to make a ‘clang clang’ sound. Tramways have become a kind of affectionate memory of old Beijing and old Qianmen. To reproduce the historical charm of old Qianmen, a section of tramway is specially restored for the enjoyment of the world. Opening hours: 09:00 – 20:20 all year round.Beijing Central Axis Tour by Trolley
