Tushan Temple is located at the cableway transfer station in the Zhenwu Mountain Scenic Area on the southern mountain. Originally known as Yuwang Temple, it is one of the oldest existing temples in Chongqing. The temple is also called ‘Zunwu Temple’ as it enshrines the statue of Zunwu Zu, a Taoist immortal. According to historical records, Yu the Great married a lady from Tu Mountain during his water control efforts. To commemorate his achievements, the ancients built the ‘Yuwang Temple’ on the mountain. Later, Yuwang Temple and Zhenwu Temple came into being. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the temple was expanded and Zhenwu Temple merged with the site of Yuwang Temple. Hence, it is called ‘Tushan Temple’ with the words ‘Tushan Scenic Spot’ inscribed on the temple gate. Currently, the temple has eight main halls and over a hundred rooms. The main hall houses statues of Sakyamuni and Zunwu Zu. The third hall enshrines statues of Yu the Great and Lady Tu, with the ‘Yu the Great’s Water Control Stele’ standing beside them. It is a harmonious Buddhist and Taoist temple and is open to the public from 8:00 to 17:00 all year round.
