The twelve peaks of Wushan are located on both sides of the Yangtze River in the east of Wushan County. There are six peaks on the south and north sides of the river. Each is 10 to 30 kilometers away from the county seat. The six peaks on the north side are Denglong Peak, Chaoyun Peak, Shengquan Peak, Wangxia (Goddess) Peak, Jixian Peak and Songluan Peak, all of which can be seen one by one. The Jingtan Peak, Qiyun Peak and Shangsheng Peak on the six peaks in the south of the Yangtze River are hidden behind the mountains along the shore. Only Feifeng Peak, Cuiping Peak and Juhe Peak can be seen. The twelve peaks have various postures and are as beautiful as a painting. Since ancient times, they have been renowned all over the world. The ancient poem ‘Set sail down the Wuxia Gorge, with the heart on the twelve peaks’ expresses people’s admiration for the twelve peaks. In addition to their beautiful and diverse peak shapes, the twelve peaks of Wushan are unpredictable and come and go without a trace. The Wushan cloud and rain also greatly increase its mysterious color. In the gorge area, where the mountains are high and the valleys are deep, the humid air that does not disperse by evaporation slowly rises along the slopes. Sometimes it will form floating clouds and drizzle. In the clouds and fog, sometimes it will turn into billowing dark clouds, and sometimes it will become a vast expanse of white fog. The twelve peaks will appear and disappear from time to time, like a fairyland.
