Wangkou is an ancient Huizhou village on the eastern line of Wuyuan. It is located on one side of a large river, and opposite is the undulating Xiangshan Mountain. Relatively speaking, Wangkou is not overly commercialized and still retains the original and simple folk customs. There is a Yu Clan Ancestral Hall built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty in the village. The delicate carved architecture is very worth seeing.
The village is not large. It takes only about one or two hours to walk slowly through it. At the entrance of the village, there are two large camphor trees, a water mill, and a viewing platform. Walking inside is an ancient road along the river. The main attractions of Wangkou are all on the roadside. Walking from one end to the other, you can basically see all of Wangkou. Relatively speaking, Wangkou is not so commercialized. Although there are some shops in the village, almost no hawking sounds can be heard on the street, allowing people to calm down and enjoy the scenery. If you have enough time, you can also walk into the alleys beside the village footpath and see more life-like old houses. In addition to the ancient buildings such as the Yijing Hall, Maode Hall, Dafudi, and Yangyuan Study, which are simple and elegant, the Yu Clan Ancestral Hall near the Dongguan Bridge in Wangkou is a must-see. The ancestral hall is a Qing Dynasty building and is famous for its wood carvings. It not only has a history of hundreds of years, but also every wooden structure inside the building is exquisitely carved and very magnificent. Tourists come here and all look up and admire those intricate patterns carefully, feeling deeply moved. Walking a little further from the Yu Clan Ancestral Hall, you can see the stilling basin covered by houses. On one side of the dam, the water surface is like a mirror, and on the other side, the rapids are rolling. It is also a very eye-catching landscape. The Pingduyan Drifting Pier is also nearby. You can take a bamboo raft and drift all the way back to the Xiguan Bridge near the entrance. And if you walk from the Dongguan Bridge to the other side, you will find that there is a footpath leading to the mountain. There are very few tourists here. There are many ancient trees on the mountain, and you can enjoy the tranquility of nature. Looking down the mountain, you can see the green water of the Yongchuan River and the bamboo rafts dotted on the water surface. The ancient village with green tiles and white walls on the opposite side is also in full view. Walking down the mountain like this will also bring you back to the entrance without having to retrace your steps. Open all year round. Opening hours: 07:30 – 17:00.
