Wangmu Pool is located at the eastern end of Huanshan Road, under Tiger Mountain, south of Longshan Reservoir. In ancient times, it was called Qunyu Nunnery and also known as Yaochi. Cao Zhi of the Three Kingdoms period had the verse ‘Passing by the abode of the Queen Mother of the West and looking down among the Five Sacred Mountains’. Li Bai of the Tang Dynasty also chanted ‘Drinking from Wangmu Pool in the morning and staying at Tianmen Que at dusk’, which shows the long history of the temple’s construction. Wangmu Pool is built near a stream. The halls, verandas, pavilions and kiosks are scattered on three terraces. The red walls and black tiles are set off among the green pines and cypresses. It is divided into a front yard and a back yard. In the front yard, there is Wangmu Spring. The spring water is clear and sweet. It was dug by Mr. Feng Yuxiang in 1932 to solve the drinking water problem of residents in Taicheng. In the back yard is the Qizhen Hall. The clay sculptures inside the hall have different expressions and are vivid. To the east is the Waterfall Viewing Pavilion. To the west is the Laojun Hall, which displays the ‘Mandarin Duck Stele’ of the Tang Dynasty. Although Wangmu Pool is not large in scale, it has a long history and profound culture. It is a must-visit place for those who like and study ancient Chinese culture.
