Wanzhou Tianzi City and Mopan Zhai are collectively known as the Lesser and Greater Stone Cities. Wanzhou Tianzi City is an ancient fortress standing solitary with steep walls and accessible only through a single gate. According to legend, during the Three Kingdoms period, Emperor Liu Bei of Shu once stationed his troops here when he was waging war against Wu, hence the name Tianzi City. It is one of the ‘Eight Scenic Spots of Wanzhou’. Mopan Zhai, located within the new county town of Yunyang, was originally named Panshi City and is also referred to as the Lesser Stone City or Tiansheng City. Constructed during the Southern Song Dynasty, Mopan Zhai is strategically positioned due to its precipitous terrain, making it a crucial battleground throughout history. It is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
