The Weihai Naval Academy is located within the Liugong Island Scenic Area of Weihai, constructed in the 16th year of the Guangxu Emperor (1890 AD), covering an area of approximately 20,000 square meters. It features existing structures such as the eastern and western gates, a screen wall, battlements, a small stage, and stables, making it the only traceable naval academy in China today. At that time, the academy was overseen by Admiral Ding Ruchang. In the winter of 1889, 36 students were recruited from Shanghai, Fujian, Guangdong, and other places, with an additional 10 students attending as annex students, totaling 46. In May 1890, the naval school began its classes, offering courses in English, geometry, algebra, navigation, astronomy, and more, equipped with four training ships: Minjie, Kangji, Weiyuan, and Haijing, for educational purposes. The academy operated for four years and graduated a class of 30 navigators. After the First Sino-Japanese War, Liugong Island fell, and the naval academy was destroyed in the conflict. In June 2004, the Weihai Naval Academy was restored and opened to the public. It is open all year round from 07:30 to 17:30.
