Weiyuan Fort is built near the river and located under the Humen Bridge. Because it is located at the natural danger of the Pearl River Estuary in the south, it is a river defense fortress leading to the inland of Guangdong. As early as the Ming Dynasty, the imperial court began to build simple military blockhouses in Humen to resist foreign invaders. During the Opium War, imperial envoy Lin Zexu, naval general Guan Tianpei, and governor-general of Guangdong and Guangxi Deng Tingzhen and others went through hardships in Humen.
Taking Weiyuan Fort as the core, they built multiple forts on both sides of the river in the middle of the river. The defense line runs through the river mouth and is known as the ‘golden lock and copper pass’. Even today, tourists can still appreciate the remnants of the Humen battle in those years at Weiyuan Fort. Weiyuan Fort is an ancient fort that is relatively completely preserved in our country. The Weiyuan Island where it is located is one of the ancient battlefield sites of the Opium War and also the core position of Humen estuary defense. At the Naval Battle Museum about 300 meters east of Weiyuan Fort, tourists can also learn about the national passion and bitter history of the Opium War in many aspects.
