Wen Mei Kan is a Song-dynasty style replica building located within Shen Garden, characterized by its simple and ancient design. The three characters ‘Wen Mei Kan’ are written by Shen Ding’an, the president of the Shaoxing Calligraphers’ Association. The word ‘Wen’ signifies inquiry and exploration, ‘Mei’ refers to the plum blossom, a flower cherished by the poet Lu You throughout his life. The Shen Garden boasts a generous amount of plum blossoms, filling the garden with fragrance, especially beautiful on snowy days.

It is said that Lu You is one of the most prolific poets in Chinese history, with over 9300 poems preserved to this day. Among them, more than 200 poems describe the plum blossom, reflecting his particular fondness for it. The term ‘Kan’ refers to a type of architectural structure built over water. Hence, the name ‘Wen Mei Kan’ is derived from these meanings. The garden is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
