Daqiu, phonetically similar to the local dialect for ‘cross-dwelling’, is named after the island’s early inhabitants who migrated here due to poverty. The island resembles a reclining black bull in the sea, hence the waters in front of it are known as Black Bull Bay, a deep-water area suitable for docking heavier ships. During the 1940s, when the Japanese forces occupied the eastern coastal regions of China, their fleet was anchored in these waters. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, various types of naval vessels have frequently docked here as well. Shuangfeng Mountain, Nanbai Islet, and Beibai Islet are located southeast of Daqiu Island and serve as gathering points for various migratory birds. Every lunar month from April to October, large numbers of birds such as seagulls, egrets, petrels, white storks, and red-billed herons flock here to breed, sometimes numbering over ten thousand. The sight of the birds flapping their wings and their melodious calls is truly spectacular. The scenic spots on Daqiu Island are primarily concentrated in four major areas: the Stone Buddha Sea View, the Great Stone Beach, the Echoing Snow Pavilion, and Zheng Chenggong’s Training Ground.
