The Western Pureland Monastery is located on Mount Putuo, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province. Its Buddhist lineage belongs to the Linji school. It was originally founded by Master Fusheng. The Western Pureland Monastery, formerly known as Western Nunnery, is located on Guanyin Jump in the southeast of Mount Putuo, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province. At the west foot is the bronze statue of Guanyin in the South China Sea. It was founded by monk Fusheng in the late Qing Dynasty and was destroyed by fire in 1920. Master Fusheng, undeterred by hardships, raised funds to rebuild it. At the beginning of liberation, monks Kai Xian, Wu Zhi and Chi Lian lived here. In 1991, the Buddhist Association of Mount Putuo rebuilt it. By the middle of 1993, it was completed and renamed ‘Western Pureland Monastery’. The east building is a guest house. The west building is ‘Master Huie Memorial Hall’ and ‘Xiangguang Pavilion’. The courtyard on the west side of the main hall is elegant. There is a chanting hall built here. The floor of the hall is paved with glittering glass with lotus patterns. Inside the hall, there is a standing statue of Amitabha Buddha, 2.2 meters high. Outside the hall, there is a Seven Treasure Lotus Pond. Between the pond are small white marble arch bridges with carved railings and jade-like masonry. Along the southwest, there is a corridor. On the walls are four large relief sculptures of the ‘Twenty-Four Contemplations Sutra’ carved on bluestone and white jade. Incense has been continuously burning and Buddhist chants have never ceased. It is a pure land monastery dedicated to the practice on Mount Putuo. There are 107 halls with a construction area of 2902.89 square meters and are inhabited by bhikkhus.
