Wofo Temple, also known as the ‘Temple of Universal Awakening,’ is located on the southern slope of Shouniu Mountain in the Western Hills and to the east of Fragrant Hill, 30 kilometers away from the city center. Originally built during the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty (627-649), it was initially named the Tusita Temple, also known as the Shou’an Temple. Over the generations, the temple has experienced periods of decay and reconstruction, and its name has changed with the dynasties.

After being renovated in the twelfth year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed the Temple of Universal Awakening. Due to the presence of a sandalwood reclining Buddha statue in the temple during the Tang Dynasty, and the later addition of a massive copper statue of Sakyamuni in the Yuan Dynasty, the temple is commonly referred to as the ‘Wofo Temple.’ The temple stands against the mountain, with the Reclining Buddha Hall being the essence of the entire complex.

Inside the hall, there is a massive copper reclining Buddha statue. The Buddha is over 5 meters long and weighs approximately 54 tons, lying in a sleeping position on a high platform with legs extended, left hand resting on the leg, and right hand supporting the head, exuding a natural demeanor, believed to be the posture of Sakyamuni at the time of his Nirvana in India. Beside it, there are twelve small clay Buddha statues, depicting the scene of Sakyamuni instructing his disciples about his last wishes.

This copper statue, created in the Yuan Dynasty (14th century), is a treasure of ancient Chinese religious art. The temple is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00. Note that only the main courtyard is open to visitors.
