Wukong Temple was first built in the Liang Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties. In the Northern Song Dynasty, a seven-level pagoda was built, named Huazang Pagoda, also known as Wukong Pagoda. Together with Xingguo Pagoda in Jiangyin City, it is praised as ‘Twin Pagodas of Chengjiang’. Sharira porcelain bottles were unearthed in the temple. According to the inscriptions on the stone cover, these sharira are the real sharira of Master Shenqie, a famous monk in the Tang Dynasty. Master Shenqie is also known as the incarnation of Guanyin Bodhisattva in later folk legends. During a certain period in Chinese history, all Guanyin Buddha statues were modeled after his image.
The rebuilt Wukong Temple now covers an area of 209 mu.
