Wuling Village is nestled atop the ridge of Moganshan, offering expansive views and a secluded location, reminiscent of the ‘world apart’ described by Tao Yuanming, hence its name ‘Wuling Village’. It is surrounded by attractions such as the Wenjing Pavilion, Di Cui Terrace, Xuguang Terrace, and the Ancient Tianchi Lake. Standing high, one can see far into the lush greenery, with the sharply defined Wenjing Pavilion, the shimmering Di Cui Pond, the proudly standing Xuguang Terrace, and the tranquil Ancient Tianchi Lake.
Wuling Village is known for its villa clusters. In 1894, an American missionary commissioned a local craftsman to build the first mountain summer cottage, which was later followed by the construction of the first Moganshan villa by another American missionary two years later. This marked the beginning of a boom, leading to the development of 258 villas scattered across the mountains, turning the area into a villa museum. These villas, which blend Chinese classical, Western pastoral, and medieval European castle architectural styles, were favored by the upper class during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. For instance, Song Meiling once stayed at the Songyue Cottage, and Jue Yin Building was the former residence of Chen Shutong. Visitors are advised to spend a day here, strolling around the old villas to feel the depth of history. Don’t forget to taste local specialties such as Qian Zhang Baozi, dried bamboo shoots, white lentils, red bean zongzi, and Hu sheep. The scenic area is open all year round, 24 hours a day.
