Xiamen Museum is an important local comprehensive museum in the southeast region of China, dedicated to the collection, protection, research, and display of precious cultural heritage in the southeast region, especially across the Fujian-Taiwan Straits. Established in 1983 and officially opened to the public in 1988, the museum was originally located in the world-renowned scenic spot of Gulangyu Island, within the Bagua Building. As Xiamen’s economy and various undertakings rapidly developed, the Bagua Building, once a foreign-style residence, could no longer meet the museum’s needs for preserving and displaying cultural heritage and the development of its causes. The new museum is situated in the northeast of Xiamen’s Cultural and Art Center, with a construction area six times larger than the old one.

In June 2006, with the approval of the Xiamen Municipal Committee Organizational Committee, the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall and the Xiamen Cultural Heritage Protection Center were integrated into the Xiamen Museum. Today, Xiamen Museum consists of seven parts: the main museum, Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall, Xiamen Special Economic Zone Memorial Hall, Xiamen Cultural Heritage Protection Center, Siming Prison Break Exhibition Hall, Chen Huacheng Memorial Hall, and Chen Sheng Yuan’s Former Residence.

The museum currently exhibits several basic exhibitions open to the public, including ‘Xiamen History Exhibition’, ‘Min-Tai Ancient Stone Sculpture Grand View Garden’, and ‘Min-Tai Folk Customs Exhibition’. The predecessor of the latter, the ‘Min-Tai Folk Customs Exhibition’ at the old museum, won the 1998 National Top Ten Cultural Relics Exhibition Awards. Additionally, ‘Chinese Ethnic and Folk Musical Instruments Exhibition’ and ‘Museum Collection Highlights Exhibition’ are also being prepared and arranged.

Regular exhibitions open to the public all year round include ‘Zheng Chenggong Historical Exhibition’ at the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall, ‘Glorious Years – Xiamen Special Economic Zone Construction History Exhibition’ at the Xiamen Special Economic Zone Memorial Hall, ‘Xiamen Prison Break Exhibition’ at the Xiamen Prison Break site, ‘Chen Huacheng Achievement Exhibition’ at Chen Gongci, and ‘Opium War and Xiamen’ historical exhibition at Chen Sheng Yuan’s Former Residence.
