Xiamen Museum is a significant comprehensive local museum in the southeast region of China, dedicated to the collection, protection, study, and display of precious cultural heritage, especially from the Fujian-Taiwan Strait area. Established in 1983 and officially opened to the public in 1988, the old museum was originally located in the world-renowned scenic spot of Gulangyu Island, within the Bagua Building.

With the rapid development of Xiamen’s economy and various undertakings, the Bagua Building, as a western-style residence, could no longer meet the museum’s needs for protecting and displaying cultural heritage and the development of its endeavors. The new museum is situated in the northeast of Xiamen’s Cultural and Art Center, with a construction area six times larger than the old site.

In June 2006, with the approval of the Xiamen Municipal Committee’s Institutional Establishment Committee, the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall and the Xiamen Cultural Heritage Protection Center were integrated into the Xiamen Museum. Today, the Xiamen Museum consists of seven parts: the main museum, the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall, the Xiamen Special Economic Zone Memorial Hall, the Xiamen Cultural Heritage Protection Center, the Siming Prison Break Exhibition Hall, the Chen Huacheng Memorial Hall, and the Chen Sheng Yuan Former Residence.

The museum currently offers basic exhibitions open to the public, including the ‘Xiamen History Exhibition’, ‘Fujian-Taiwan Ancient Stone Sculpture Grand View Garden’, and ‘Fujian-Taiwan Folk Customs Exhibition’. Notably, the ‘Fujian-Taiwan Folk Customs Exhibition’, the predecessor of the latter, won the 1998 National Top Ten Cultural Relics Exhibition Awards. Additionally, the ‘Chinese Ethnic and Folk Musical Instruments Exhibition’ and the ‘Museum Collection Fine Exhibition’ are also in preparation and arrangement.

Other year-round open basic exhibitions include the ‘Zheng Chenggong Historical Exhibition’ at the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall, the ‘Glorious Years – Xiamen Special Economic Zone Construction History Exhibition’ at the Xiamen Special Economic Zone Memorial Hall, the ‘Xiamen Prison Break Exhibition’ at the Xiamen Prison Break site, the ‘Chen Huacheng Achievement Exhibition’ at Chen Gong Temple, and the ‘Opium War and Xiamen’ historical exhibition at the Chen Sheng Yuan Former Residence.
