Xiamen Underwater World is located on the scenic Gulangyu Island, a 5A-level scenic spot. With a total construction area of over 10,000 square meters, it officially opened to the public on New Year’s Day in 1998. It is a large-scale marine aquarium integrating tourism, entertainment, and popular science education.
The building of Xiamen Underwater World resembles a blue crystal palace. The comfortable visiting environment and charming underwater scenery inside the museum enjoy the reputation of the “Underwater Dragon Palace”.
There are five special exhibition areas in the museum: the Freshwater Fish Hall, the Whale and Dolphin Specimen Hall, the Ocean Hall, the Underwater Tunnel, and the Marine Mammal Performance Hall. It showcases more than 350 species and over 10,000 well-known and rare aquatic animals from China’s coastal waters, the Indian Ocean, the Australian waters, the Amazon River and other world water areas.
In this blue underwater dragon palace, you can witness the huge giant grouper, the cute spotted seal, the massive and fierce shark family, the brave sawfish brothers, as well as the Mexican axolotl known as the “Underwater Witch”, the Chinese suckerfish known as the “Asian Mermaid”, the pot-bellied seahorse known as the “Australian Southern Gentleman”, and the pearl stingray known as the “Latent Killer”.
Particularly worth seeing is the 18.6-meter-long and 48-ton sperm whale specimen displayed in the museum, which is the treasure of Xiamen Underwater World.
In addition, there are wonderful marine mammal star performances to add fun to your visit, allowing you to have a fulfilling trip to the dragon palace and enjoy the romantic and charming underwater world.
Freshwater Fish Hall:
Freshwater fish in the world come in various shapes and numerous species. The specially selected fish displayed in the Freshwater Fish Hall of Xiamen Underwater World include: Chinese suckerfish, sturgeon, Amazon River fish, archerfish, arowana, electric eel, temple turtle, kissing gourami, guppy, red-tailed catfish, etc., taking you into the colorful fish kingdom!
Opening hours:
From April 1st to June 30th, it is open from 8:00 to 19:00;
From November 1st to March 31st, it is open from 8:00 to 18:30;
From September 1st to October 31st, it is open from 8:00 to 19:00;
From July 1st to August 31st, it is open from 8:00 to 21:00.
Preferential policies:
Children: Free for those under 1.2 meters (excluding 1.2M); discounted tickets for those 1.2 meters (including 1.2 meters) to 1.4 meters (excluding 1.4 meters).
Seniors: Discounted tickets for seniors aged 60 (including) to 69 (including) with ID cards; free for those aged 70 (including) with ID cards.
Military personnel: Free for those with disabled military certificates; discounted tickets for those with active-duty soldier certificates/officer certificates, military security cards, and retired officer certificates.
Supplementary note: Visitors over 1.4 meters need to make up the tickets on site. After children obtain free tickets, they should be accompanied by adult visitors with adult tickets or discounted tickets to enter the museum for a visit. The scenic area does not accept children under a certain height…
Children under 2 meters in height may visit the museum alone or be accompanied by military personnel or elderly individuals who hold free tickets for children. Adult visitors with regular or discounted tickets are allowed to bring only one child under 1.2 meters for free. For each additional child, discounted tickets must be purchased separately.

Essential Tips: To enjoy this attraction, a ferry ticket must be purchased to travel to Gulangyu Island. The schedule for marine animal performances is subject to the on-site announcement times.
