Xianghua Street was built in the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty and became a commercial area in the late Qing Dynasty. It was originally called Hengzhi Street. The flagstone street is in a ‘T’ shape. The section east of Puji Temple is called Zhijie, and the section from Wenchang Pavilion to Hongfa Zen Monastery is called Hengjie. It is more than 300 meters in length. Shops line up along the street. Although short, it relatively completely retains the style and features of ancient streets. This street, together with nearby alleys, lanes and temples, gives people a strong sense of history. After the reform and opening up in 1979, it became the central area of commerce and catering industry on Mount Putuo. In 1995, the catering industry was relocated to Sijifan Seafood Garden. In the same year, the entire row of wooden structure buildings on the south side was demolished and rebuilt into brick-wood structures and renamed Xianghua Street. Here, many tourist craft souvenirs and local specialties of Mount Putuo are sold. Open all day long throughout the year.
