Xiehe Chapel is one of the earliest churches on Gulangyu Island. In the mid-19th century, many devout Christians arrived on Gulangyu Island and decided to build a church for worship. Various mission believers contributed funds to construct the church on Deer Reef Hill in Gulangyu. The neoclassical-style church was completed in 1863 and was then known as the ‘International Chapel’. In 1911, the church was rebuilt and renamed ‘Xiehe Chapel’.

After 1949, Xiehe Chapel was managed by Chinese churches. By the end of March 1951, the church was taken over by the elders of Sanyuan Church and the Gospel Hall. From 1952 onwards, Xiehe Chapel was used by the Second Hospital of Xiamen City. In 1974, due to the development needs of the Second Hospital, the church was nearly demolished to build a pharmacy for the hospital. However, through the strenuous efforts of architect Mr.

Bai Jiaxin, the church was preserved by constructing some buildings around it, which obscured the church from view but ensured its survival. Xiehe Chapel has now been renovated and restored to its original appearance, presenting itself to tourists in a manner that maintains its historical integrity. The opening hours and business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
