Xinjiang Academy is located on the southern bank of the Xinjiang River in Xinzhou District, Shangrao City. It is one of the four ancient academies in Jiangxi Province.
It was originally established in 1694 (the 33rd year of the Kangxi Emperor’s reign) as Qujiang Academy. In 1712 (the 51st year of Kangxi’s reign), it was expanded and renamed ‘Zhongling Lecture Hall’. In 1743 (the 8th year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign), a building was constructed on the back mountain to worship Zhu Xi, and it was renamed ‘Ziyang Academy’. By 1781 (the 46th year of Qianlong’s reign), it was known as ‘Xinjiang Academy’.
The academy is surrounded by lush greenery. The four-angled, flying-eave Kuixing Pavilion stands on Zhongling Terrace, with carved beams and painted rafters, flower windows, and blue tiles, exuding an antique charm. Climbing the pavilion offers a panoramic view of the Xinjiang River and a distant view of Ling Mountain, providing a delightful experience. In front of Zhongling Terrace, there are still ancient buildings such as Chunfeng Pavilion, Yita Pavilion, Xixiu Pavilion, and Rixin Study. Although Yile Hall has been destroyed, the stone tablet and rockeries in front of the hall are still intact.
Opening hours: Closed all day on Mondays throughout the year; Open from 09:00 to 17:00 from Tuesdays to Sundays throughout the year.
