Xinmen Street is located in Licheng District, Quanzhou City, adjacent to Tumen Street. During the Southern Tang Dynasty, when ‘King of Jinjiang’ Liu Congxiao built the Luocheng, he added the Linzhang Gate, which is commonly referred to by the locals as ‘Xinmen’. Traveling east from Xinmen to Zhongshan Road, the area is named ‘Xinmen Street’. It is the second main east-west street south of Dongxi Street in the city center.
In the western section of Xinmen Street, there is a park called Fangcao Garden, which was first constructed during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty and has a history of over three hundred years. It is the Spring Garden (also known as ‘Fangcao Garden’) among the four seasonal gardens—Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter—created by General Shi Lang in Quanzhou. ‘Fangcao’ is inspired by the four-season appreciation poetry ‘Spring Outing in the Fragrant Grass’ and was designed and constructed with this concept in mind, although it later fell into disrepair.

The park is planned to cover an area of 90 acres, primarily featuring plant-based landscapes. Presently, the garden includes attractions such as Chongzheng Academy, the ‘Three Continents Fragrant Grass’ archway, and Hanbi Pavilion. Strolling through the garden, one finds lush greenery with a variety of tall trees like banyan, longan, magnolia, and palm trees, creating a spacious area for leisure, play, and rest.

The garden also makes use of the existing terrain, creating mounds and planting solitary shaped banyan stumps, extensively planting aromatic trees like camphor and osmanthus, complemented by a large lawn and various flowering shrubs. The diverse plant forms and the changing colors and shapes of the flowers throughout the seasons will captivate your interest and make you forget to return. Here, the greenery is abundant, and the garden is full of wonders, with a ‘urban forest’ atmosphere that makes one feel as if they have ‘returned to nature’, providing a comfortable and pleasant experience.
