Xintiandi, nestled close to Huaihai Road, has undergone a remarkable transformation from the old Shanghai Shikumen alleyways into a must-visit destination for both domestic and international tourists, as well as a popular spot for local youth. The area offers a unique blend of old and new, providing a spacious and grand atmosphere compared to the crowded and narrow lanes of Tianzifang.

During the day, visitors can indulge in street photography with beautiful models and enjoy leisurely afternoon tea. As night falls, Xintiandi comes alive with a vibrant nightlife, where one can explore various bars and experience the essence of Shanghai’s nights. Dining, commerce, entertainment, and cultural shops are neatly arranged along a straight pedestrian street, making it easy to navigate and explore.

Strolling through Xintiandi, one can still find traditional elements such as blue brick walkways, red and blue clear water brick walls, and heavy black lacquered doors, which evoke a sense of stepping back in time to the 1920s and 1930s Shanghai. However, stepping inside each building reveals a very modern and fashionable interior.

For those interested, quieter alleyways offer a perfect setting for photography and are often frequented by professional photographers for their photoshoots. Xintiandi is divided into two parts: South Block and North Block. The South Block, adjacent to the Xintiandi Station on Metro Line 10, is dominated by modern architecture with a mix of old Shikumen buildings. It hosts a variety of distinctive merchants, including the famous Chinese cuisine restaurant Din Tai Fung, the always-crowded Kojima Japanese cuisine, the Italian Mamnoon Pizza, and the Godiva chocolate and beverage store.

This fusion of historic charm and contemporary style makes Xintiandi a unique destination that appeals to a wide range of visitors, offering a glimpse into Shanghai’s past while enjoying its present-day offerings.Xintiandi Fashion Shopping Center is a modern hub that offers a global array of dining options. It features a glass curtain wall structure that houses well-known brands such as Vera Wang’s flagship store in China, Jay Chou’s StayReal, Stefanie Sun’s Smudge, and Show Lo’s Stage. In addition, it includes a food court, UME Xintiandi Cinema, and a comprehensive fitness center.

The North Block, located near the Huaihai Road business district, is marked by a ‘Fountain of Happiness’ at the entrance square. The fountain is adorned with bronze statues symbolizing ‘fortune,’ ‘prosperity,’ and ‘longevity,’ making it an ideal spot for commemorative photos. This block is composed of several old Shikumen houses, which have been transformed into numerous consumer venues and restaurants. They offer a wide range of international cuisines, fully showcasing Xintiandi’s global elements.

Renowned restaurants like Qiaojiangnan and Caidixuan are part of the North Block, which also boasts a multitude of bars to enrich your nightlife. Xintiandi is open all year round, operating 24 hours a day.

1. There are more dining options at the Xintiandi Plaza inside (South Block No. 6) compared to the Western-style dining and bars along the street.
2. Many well-known bars and restaurants in Xintiandi are usually fully booked, so it is advisable to make reservations in advance.
3. If you have time, it is worth visiting the ‘First National Congress’ site on Xingye Road, which serves as the dividing line between the South and North blocks, as well as the Taipingqiao Park next to the South block.
