The Xiongya Suo Ancient City gets its name because there is a majestic cliff on the Baima Island in the northeast. Xiongya Suo Ancient City was built in the early Ming Dynasty (1388) to resist Japanese pirates. After its completion, Xiongya Suo became one of the few important coastal defense locations in Shandong. Xiongya Suo is a square castle with a perimeter of 2 kilometers and an area of 375 mu. The city wall is rammed with earth and wrapped with blue bricks and stones. It is 5 meters high and 3 meters wide at the top, very solid. The battlements on the wall are made of blue bricks. There is a moat surrounding the outside of the wall. There are city gates such as ‘Feng’en’, ‘Yingxun’, and ‘Zhenwei’, and there are city towers built on all the gates. Inside the city, there is a cross-shaped main street leading to each gate. The street is paved with stone slabs. The streets are flat and there are many shops and a prosperous market. Xiongya Suo was an important coastal area for defending against Japanese pirates at that time. In the twelfth year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1734), Xiongya Suo was abolished and abandoned. The city is gradually declining and most of it has been destroyed. Now the south gate and the south gate tower are still relatively well preserved. The west gate still retains its original appearance when it was first built in the Ming Dynasty. The two characters ‘Zhenwei’ on the plaque above the gate opening can still be recognized. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the opening situation on the day.
