Jiaolu Hermitage, also known as Lu Hermitage and Zhengdeng Court, was established during the Shaoxing years of the Song Dynasty (1131-1162). The Imperial Guard Ma Jun Si was stationed in the Xixi Wetland area of Hangzhou, and Zhengdeng Court was built in Longju Valley to meet the needs of worship.
In the early years of the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573), the master of Zhengdeng Court, Ru Jue, relocated the court to Hezhu, initially named Zhengdeng Hermitage. At the end of the Ming Dynasty, during the renovation, Dong Qichang inscribed the title.
Jiaolu Hermitage is one of the famous temples in the history of Xixi, a place where literati and poets gathered to discuss poetry and calligraphy. The poetic painting of ‘a stream of song and a stream of smoke’ is set against the backdrop of Jiaolu Hermitage.
