Xu Xilin’s former residence is located in Sunjia Lou, Dongpu Town, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province. The residence, facing south, is a Qing Dynasty building with characteristics of a water town’s dwelling. It consists of a gatehouse, a main hall, a seat building, a book collection building, and a study room called Tongying. Xu Xilin, styled Bosun, also known as Guanghan, was born into a merchant family in Shaoxing, Zhejiang. He joined the Restoration Society in 1904 and founded the Hotai School. In 1905, he and Tao Chengzhang successively established a sports association and Datong Normal School in Shaoxing, training core members of the association, plotting an armed uprising. To gain military power, he purchased the title of a road member and in 1906, he went to Anhui to serve as the director of the Army Primary School and donated funds to serve as the director of the Anqing Police Department and the supervisor of the school. In July 1907, he launched the Wan-Zhe Uprising with Qiu Jin, which failed, and he died a heroic death at the age of 35.
