Yan Tian in Wuyuan is located in the northwestern part of Wuyuan County, in the village of Yan Tian, and is the settlement where the Li surname migrated into Wuyuan. According to the ‘Wuyuan County Gazetteer’, it was named ‘Yan Tian’ because the Li family ‘obtained a lot from the fields’ and governed their family with strictness. Other surnames such as Zhu and Wang also migrated to Yan Tian to co-inhabit.

Presently, there are over 800 people in Upper Yan Tian and about 500 in Lower Yan Tian. The village is 38 kilometers away from the county town of Ziyang. Over thousands of years, the Li family and those who migrated later, such as the Zhu and Wang families, built numerous public buildings within the settlement for living and psychological needs. These include ancestral halls like the Yan Tian Li Ancestral Hall, Li’s Sub-ancestral Hall Yishutang, Li’s Sub-ancestral Hall Baoshan Hall, Zhu’s Order Hall, Zhu’s Respect Hall, Zhu’s Harmony Hall, Zhu’s Sub-ancestral Hall Zongzheng Hall, and Wang’s Three Locust Tree Ancestral Hall; as well as temples like the Four Spirits Temple, Longhua Temple, Yongji Temple, and Cuwei Temple, among others.

Many of these have been destroyed in the course of societal changes. The remaining residences and shops (the ancient streets in Yan Tian village, which used to be a major thoroughfare for both Hui and Rao prefectures, with many shops on both sides of the street) are mostly dilapidated or have been reconstructed.
