Yang Amiao, whose given name is Jiazhong, was an overseas Chinese in the Philippines. The residence was built in the 20th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1894) and was completely completed in the Xinhai year of the Xuantong reign (1911), taking 18 years. It has three entrances and five bays, with a hanging gable roof. There is a row of auxiliary houses on each of the east and west sides.
The large stone courtyard in front of the house is surrounded by brick walls on three sides. There is a large courtyard in front of the main building. Between the east and west end rooms and the east and west wing rooms on both sides, two small and straight courtyards are formed respectively, commonly known as the “Five Plum Blossom Patios”. The whole building looks beautiful, generous, spacious and bright.

The walls inside and outside the house, under the eaves, between the walls, on the column heads and on the doors and windows are decorated with extremely delicate woodcarvings, brick carvings, lacquer carvings, ash carvings and carvings of gabbro and granite. Using the techniques of openwork carving, relief carving and plane carving, a large number of rare birds and animals, flowers, birds, swimming fish, landscapes and figures, stories from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and antiques patterns are exquisitely carved.

The wall piers in the hall are engraved with the calligraphy works of ancient calligraphers and painters such as Yan Zhenqing of the Tang Dynasty, Su Shi of the Song Dynasty, Zhang Ruitu of the Ming Dynasty and Wu Lu of the Qing Dynasty. The whole building is magnificent and is rare among the folk buildings in southern Fujian.

Yang Amiao’s Former Residence is not only famous for its magnificent architectural carvings. The carvings, colored paintings and other details in the architecture are also top-quality works among southern Fujian architectures. The wall piers in its hall are engraved with the art works of ancient calligraphers and painters such as Yan Zhenqing of the Tang Dynasty, Su Shi of the Song Dynasty, Zhang Ruitu of the Ming Dynasty and Wu Lu of the Qing Dynasty.
