Yangcun Yanyi Enclosure is located in Longnan County, Jiangxi, and was built during the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, over 320 years ago, constructed by Lai Fuzhi of Yangcun. The enclosure stands at 14.3 meters high, with walls 1.45 meters thick, measuring 41.5 meters in length and 31.8 meters in width. The outer walls are solid and robust, standing upright like a thousand-foot cliff.
The walls are covered with musketry loopholes, and the four gun turrets in the southeast, northwest, southwest, and northeast directions complement each other, forming a fire network with no shooting blind spots. To enter the enclosure, one must pass through the only enclosure gate, which is equipped with an outer iron door, a middle gate, and an inner wooden door. Once the enclosure gate is closed, no outsider can enter. The layout of Yanyi Enclosure is scientific, the structure is rigorous, and the defense is appropriate. In wartime, it serves as a fortress, and in peacetime, it is a multifunctional building for home life. It fully reflects the Hakka people’s indomitable spirit in the struggle for living space and is a crystallization of the wisdom and strength of the Hakka people.
