Yanggong Causeway, one of the three causeways of West Lake, runs roughly parallel to Su Causeway and is unique as the only vehicular road among them. This lengthy causeway, which connects with the mountains encircling West Lake, was built under the supervision of Yang Mengying, the prefect of Hangzhou during the Ming Dynasty. Over the years, due to the sedimentation of the lake, the causeway gradually transformed into land. In recent years, efforts have been made to restore the historical appearance of West Lake by dredging the water area, thereby reviving the Yanggong Causeway.
The greenery along the Yanggong Causeway is quite remarkable, with several points of interest such as Gaijiaotian’s Former Residence, Guo Mansion, Hangzhou Flower Garden, and Maojiabu dotting the route. The six bridges on the causeway are famous for their significant undulations and are colloquially known as ‘rush bridges’ by local cyclists in Hangzhou. It is not uncommon for timid riders to scream on the descents. The causeway is open to the public all year round and is accessible 24 hours a day.
