Nestled amidst lush bamboo and pine trees lies the ‘Palace by the Sea’, Tai Ping Palace. Originally named Tai Ping Xing Guo Yuan, also known as Shang Yuan, it was built as a Taoist temple by Emperor Taizu of Song for Huagai Zhen Ren Liu Ruozhuo during the Jin Dynasty, specifically between 1190 and 1195 AD. The main hall is called San Qing Hall, with auxiliary halls including San Guan Hall and Zhen Wu Hall, located at the northern foot of Shang Yuan Mountain in the eastern part of Lao Mountain, by the Yangkou Bay. Upon entering the palace compound, the first thing one sees are the four large characters ‘Palace by the Sea’, said to be bestowed by Emperor Taizu during the construction of Tai Ping Palace, and the calligraphy is the authentic handwriting of Hua Shi Kui from the Qing Dynasty. The entire architecture of Tai Ping Palace forms a ‘pin’ shape, composed of the main hall and two side halls. The main hall enshrines Mazu, while the eastern and western side halls respectively enshrine Guan Sheng and Wen Chang Di Jun. Open from 1/1 to 12/31 from 08:00 to 18:00.
