The Yangshan Ancient Village Tourist Area is located within Zhenghe Township, Guiyang County. It is 30 kilometers away from Chenzhou City and 15 kilometers away from Guiyang County seat. Surrounded by green mountains and with beautiful waters meandering around, the Yangshan Ancient Village Tourist Area is like the realm described in ‘Peach Blossom Spring’. Since the ancestor moved here in 1497, it has been nearly 600 years. The entire ancient residential complex covers an area of 15,000 square meters, and there are currently 80 well-preserved ancient buildings. The village faces south and is built against the mountain. It is built by the water, and a small stream runs through the whole village, which is called ‘surrounded by a golden belt’. In terms of layout, the village pays attention to the harmony of heaven, earth and people. In structure, it reflects the Confucian thought of ‘neutralization’. It is the perfect combination of folk culture and architecture. The He clan in Yangshan Village migrated from Lujiang County. They value culture and martial arts, pursue harmony, understand etiquette and righteousness, and engage in farming and sericulture. More than ten people have become successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations or passed the provincial civil service examinations. Some have become generals and many have entered the Hanlin Academy. They do not regard themselves as a prominent clan. Instead, they help the weak and reduce poverty. They spontaneously established six village governance organizations such as the ‘Chongjiu Association (respecting the elderly)’, ‘Yixue Association (helping students)’, ‘Jiuying Association (helping children)’, ‘Jinjie Association (self-discipline)’, ‘Zongyuan Association (worshipping ancestors)’, and ‘Nüer Association (protecting women’s rights)’. This has formed a century-old family tradition of ‘tolerance, sincerity, dignity, harmony leading to auspiciousness’. It is a ‘living fossil’ of ancient folk customs in China.
