The Yangshan Stone Buddha Scenic Area is a unique combination of natural landscapes, cultural landmarks, religious culture, and historical sites. Buddhas are nestled within the rocks, rocks are surrounded by water, and water is embraced by mountains, creating a profound cultural heritage and distinctive scenery. The stone Buddha peak grotto sculptures are one of the four major stone Buddhas in the Jiangnan region.

Standing at 10 meters tall, the Buddha’s left hand rests on its knee, ready to shake hands with visitors, a posture rarely seen in the country. At the foot of Yangshan, next to the lake, lies the Stone Buddha Temple, which is surrounded by water on all sides and flanked by solitary peaks. Additionally, the Chenghuang Peak and Lingcui Peak have cliff inscriptions arranged in a staggered manner. Historical records show that following the legacy of the Eastern Jin Dynasty’s Wang Xizhi’s Orchid Pavilion gathering, many literati, scholars, and virtuous individuals often convened at the Yangshan Stone Buddha Temple, engaging in social activities and composing poetry.

In both ancient and modern times, celebrities such as Han Shizhong, Qian Miao, Lu Xun, Cai Yuanpei, Tong Jianren, Sun Ke, and Zhang Mojun, as well as some famous calligraphers from the ancient Yue, have left their traces and calligraphic treasures here. Among them, the two characters ‘Fei Yue’ are said to have been written by the famous Southern Song Dynasty general Han Shizhong. The area is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
