Yanxia Cave is located in the northwest corner of Kunyu Mountain. It is naturally formed by a突兀 rock. The cave chamber is oval-shaped, 7 meters deep and 3 meters high. The three characters ‘Yanxia Cave’ are engraved on the cave wall. Inside the cave, statues of the ‘Seven True Men’ are enshrined. In overcast weather, it is verdant and green. The sea of clouds is like waves, and there is smoke and mist. Sometimes there is a glow, either bright or dim, just like the ethereal mist and rosy clouds. The scenery is extremely magnificent. Yang Weigeng of the Qing Dynasty said: ‘The blue sky is layered and the water is gurgling. Hearing that there is a different world here. Where have the immortals in the cave gone? The misty and rosy scenery remains year after year’. In the seventh year of Dading of the Jin Dynasty (1167), Wang Chongyang, a Taoist priest from Xianyang, traveled eastward from Zhongnanshan. He gathered disciples and preached in Yanxia Cave. He also took Qiu Chuji and other six disciples. They are known as the ‘Seven True Men in the North’. Taking this as the center, he preached in Ninghai (Muping), Wendeng, Laizhou and other places and founded a new sect in Taoism – Quanzhen Sect. Quanzhen Sect was initiated by Wang Chongyang, matured by the Seven True Men, and flourished under Changchun. The Changchun True Man was conferred as the national teacher by Genghis Khan, the founder of the Yuan Dynasty, and was respected as a ‘fairy’. He became a master who led Taoism throughout the country, making Quanzhen Sect prevail throughout the country. In 1213 AD, Mr. Pengcheng from Dongmou built a Taoist temple 500 meters away from Yanxia Cave, named Quandao Nunnery. Later, Qiu Chuji changed it to Shenqingguan. Later, due to war and other reasons, the halls were destroyed. Shenqingguan has magnificent halls and buildings, with a construction area of 680 square meters. It is composed of Sanqing Hall, Wuzu Hall, Qizhen Hall, bell and drum towers, and east and west wing rooms. Yanxia Cave and Shenqingguan are the ancestral courts of Quanzhen Sect and have an important position in Chinese history. They are holy places worshipped by Chinese Taoism. Today, the stone statues of the ‘Seven True Men’ in the martial arts TV series ‘The Legend of the Condor Heroes’ by Jin Yong, copper steles, imperial edicts steles, Dan wells, and the ‘Seven True Men’s Tombs’ are well-preserved.
