Yao Guanding is located at the North Gate of Mount Tai, consisting of two peaks; the East Yao Guanding and the West Yao Guanding. Legend has it that in ancient times, Emperor Yao visited this place, watching the sunrise from the East Yao Guanding and the sunset from the West Yao Guanding; both are very pleasant experiences. Climbing up to Yao Guanding, one can gaze into the distance where the sky is a shade of purple and the sun is still slumbering.

The horizon is tinged with red, and the faint clouds in the sky are illuminated by the sun’s rays, resembling a maiden’s veil, gently floating in the air, unsure of where it will land in the hands of a lover. When the sun has not yet appeared on the horizon, looking around, the sky is a uniform silver, with blue bands to the southwest and north, neatly embedded in the land beyond the east, only the east is where the sun rises, and its position is not fixed each time.

Looking eastward, the mountains appear to be bowing low, straining to lift their heads high, with shoulders raised high, and from Yao Guanding on Mount Tai, they still seem to be underfoot. White clouds, green trees, gray rocks, red glows, distant blue bands, and the hazy sky before dawn form a truly colorful canvas. Remembering Du Fu’s famous line ‘Climb to the utmost height and look down upon the lesser hills,’ it indeed feels as if one is present at the scene.

This is a pleasure that can never be obtained in a metropolis. As the sun sets in the west, climbing up to the West Yao Guanding and looking westward, layers of red clouds gather in varying shades towards the setting sun. The fiery sun, after burning for a day, seems tired, and although it is slightly less brilliant than the sunrise, it is no less splendid. This is because the earth still has a piece of brightness, reflecting off the setting sun, making the red clouds particularly dazzling.

As the sunset gradually sinks into the western mountains, the earth becomes dim, and the sky suddenly turns gloomy, as if to declare the end of the day in an instant. Just a moment ago, before the sun set, the world was still bustling, busy people hurried home after a day’s work, and couples in love had already prepared to set out. If the sunrise is the beginning of a new day, then the sunset symbolizes the gestation and accumulation of new life! Open all year round, accessible 24/7.
