The Yazhou Site is located in Jiaoyu Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City, China, also known as Jiuyao Garden. In the third year of Qianheng during the Southern Han Dynasty (919 AD), Liu Yan, the founding emperor of the Southern Han, took advantage of the natural ponds and marshes in the area of what is now Xihu Road and Jiaoyu Road to excavate a long lake of five hundred zhang (approximately 1600 meters today), historically referred to as Xihu or Xian Lake. An islet was constructed in the lake for alchemy and the quest for immortality elixirs, hence the name Yazhou. There are nine peculiar and grotesque rocks in the lake, known as the Jiuyao Rocks. Along the lake, there are pavilions, towers, halls, and arbors, with very beautiful scenery. In 1989, it was declared a key cultural relics protection unit in Guangdong Province. The renowned writer Mr. Zhu Qianhua has provided a detailed account of ‘Yazhou’ in his garden culture essay collection ‘Rain Beats on Banana Leaves Falling Idle Courtyard · Lingnan Painted Barge Record’.
