Yishan Scenic Area is located in Yishan Town, southern part of Linqu County, and is the main ridge of the northern Yimeng Mountain. It is densely forested with numerous springs and streams, and the scenery is very beautiful. Here, you can witness the majestic Bai Zhangya Waterfall, climb to the Yu Huangding peak at an altitude of 1032 meters to overlook the smaller mountains, or experience the Yishan slide穿梭 through the forest. You can also visit Dongzhen Temple to appreciate ancient inscriptions, or go to Fayun Temple to offer incense and worship Buddha. The east gate is the entrance to the Yishan Scenic Area, close to Yishan Town and the Changshen Expressway. After purchasing tickets at the scenic area entrance, you need to take the scenic area’s sightseeing bus up the mountain. There are fixed waiting points at Dongzhen Temple, Bai Zhang Waterfall, Fayun Temple, Yu Huangding, Waitou Gu, and Shenlong Grand Canyon within the scenic area, where you can take the sightseeing bus between the scenic spots with your ticket. However, during the off-season, the sightseeing bus stops running, but visitors can drive up the mountain. It is possible to visit the main scenic spots of Yishan in a whole day: you can take the sightseeing bus to the farthest Waitou Gu first, then visit Yu Huangding by bus, and then go to Fayun Temple by slide or footpath. Then, follow the footpath down the mountain to visit Bai Zhangya Waterfall, and finally take the bus to Dongzhen Temple. If time is arranged reasonably, you can also take another footpath down the mountain from Yu Huangding (about 2 hours) to visit Shenlong Grand Canyon first and then take the bus to Fayun Temple. Waitou Gu, with an altitude of 971 meters, is the fourth highest peak of Yishan. Climbing to the top of Gu and standing at Changchun Pavilion, you can see the three sides of the cliff, and overlooking the Yishan Mountains, you can enjoy the sunrise here. On the footpath from Waitou Gu parking point to Waitou Gu, you will see many cliff sculptures, and also visit Shizi Gu, Ba Lingguan Hall, and Bixia Temple. Yu Huangding is the highest peak of Yishan, and you can overlook the surrounding mountains from the top. There is a Taoist building Yu Huang Pavilion on the top, which is majestic and atmospheric. Nearby, there are attractions such as Wanghai Pavilion, Tanhai Stone, and Taiqing Cave. A stone slide is built on the side of Tanhai Stone, and you can get gloves and sliding mats after paying, then slide down on the slide through the forest to Fayun Temple, which is about one kilometer long. Fayun Temple was originally built in the first year of the Yuanhe period of the Eastern Han Dynasty (84 AD) and is a famous temple in the Shandong area. It was almost destroyed by war. Although the current Fayun Temple was rebuilt on the original site, you can still feel the breath of history. Bai Zhangya Waterfall has a drop of more than 80 meters and is a rare large waterfall in the north of the river. In summer, you can feel very cool under the waterfall, and after the rain, the waterfall is very spectacular. Yishan has been a famous mountain in China since ancient times, ranking first among the Taoist “Five Town Mountains”. Sixteen emperors, including Emperor Wu of Han Liu Che, Emperor Taizong of Tang Li Shimin, and Emperor Taizu of Ming Zhu Yuanzhang, have made sacrifices here.
The Dongzhen Temple, located at the foot of the mountain, was built in the early Song Dynasty. Whenever emperors and generals offered sacrifices to Yishan, they would erect steles to commemorate the event. Today, you can still see those ancient steles in the Dongzhen Temple, which are invaluable records of history.
Additionally, there are restaurants such as the Pine Forest Restaurant and the Summer Resort on the mountain that provide meals, but they are relatively expensive. For those who plan a one-day trip without staying overnight, it is recommended to bring your own dry food and water.
If you wish to watch the sunrise, there are accommodations like the Guanyuntai Hotel on the mountain, but the conditions are not as good as those at the foot of the mountain. If needed, it is advised to contact the hotel in advance to book a room (contact information can be found on the official website of the scenic area).
