Nanshan is located 1.5 kilometers south of Yingde City, along the Beijiang River, with the Ming Dynasty’s nine-story Wenbi Pagoda on the opposite bank, forming one of Yingde’s eight famous scenes, known as ‘Pagoda Shadow Nanshan’. Upon entering the scenic area, the main attractions are on the east ridge by the river. At the foot of the ridge, there are scenic spots such as the Po Weng Hall and the Reading Yi Pavilion. This area is rich in cliff inscriptions, with over 70 carvings from the Tang to Qing dynasties, among which the inscriptions by Su Dongpo and Mi Fu are particularly precious. Climbing the east ridge along the winding path, to the left is a hundred-foot cliff, with the ‘Nanshan Pond’ beneath it, and to the right are peculiarly shaped rocks. Along the way, one passes by the Zhong Le Pavilion and Fei Xia Ridge. At the top of the mountain by the river, there is a two-story pavilion named ‘Xun Feng Pavilion’. It is said that Shun played the zither and performed the ‘Gazing at Goose’ tune here, reciting the ‘Xun Feng’ poem. Below the pavilion, there is a mountain path leading to the main peak, Mingxian Peak, where the terrain is steep and requires a guide’s accompaniment. From Mingxian Peak, one can overlook the land of Yingzhou. Locals enjoy climbing this peak during the Double Ninth Festival, not only for the beautiful scenery but also for the auspicious phrase ‘May you live as long as the southern mountain’. The opening hours are subject to the actual operating status on the day.
