Yingtian Academy in Shangqiu City is known as one of the four ancient academies in China along with Songyang Academy, Yuelu Academy, and Bailudong Academy. Yingtian Academy was founded by Yang Que, a native of Shangqiu in the Later Jin Dynasty of the Five Dynasties. Fan Zhongyan came to study at Yingtian Academy. Later, he got married and had children, settled down in Shangqiu, and served as the principal of Yingtian Academy. During the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty, in 1043, Yingtian Academy, a prefectural school, was changed into Nanjing Imperial College, making it one of the highest institutions of learning in the Northern Song Dynasty, equivalent to the current Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Yingtian Academy has been demolished many times. In the sixth year of Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty, when the city was relocated, Yingtian Academy was also moved to its current location – on the north side of Zhongshan East Second Street in the city. There are existing buildings such as Dacheng Hall, Minglun Hall, and Yueya Pond. Originally, there were tablets of Confucius and his disciples in Dacheng Hall. Minglun Hall is a school. Both of these buildings are of Xieshan style architecture. Dacheng Hall is a place for worshipping Confucius, and Minglun Hall is a place for taking exams. Open all year round from 9:00 to 17:30.
