Yuan Chonghuan (June 6, 1584 – September 22, 1630), styled Yuansu, and also known as Ziru, was a native of Baima Wei, Teng County, Wuzhou Prefecture, Guangxi, with ancestral roots in Dongguan, Guangdong. He was an outstanding military strategist, politician, and literary figure of the Ming Dynasty. In the forty-seventh year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, he passed the imperial examination and became the county magistrate of Shaowu, Fujian.

In 1622, during the second year of the Tianqi era, he served as the chief of the Military Affairs Department. That same year, he went out of the pass to inspect the area beyond the Great Wall and, upon returning to the capital, volunteered to defend the Eastern Liaoning region. He constructed the ancient Ningyuan city, now known as Xingcheng in Liaoning, to safeguard the area.
