Yuan Lin, also known as Yuangonglin, is the cemetery of Yuan Shikai. The major feature of the cemetery architecture is the combination of Chinese and Western styles. The building complex imitates the architectural style of the imperial tombs of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The tomb of Yuan Shikai is built in the form of Grant’s tomb by the river. The overall style is very different but extremely unique.

The main buildings include screen wall, divine path, memorial archway, stele pavilion, and sacrificial hall courtyard. At the southern end of Yuan Lin is a large screen wall, which adopts the traditional Chinese hard mountain top and green glazed tile regulations. The inner side is fully decorated with brick carvings. It is one of the largest existing screen walls in the country with exquisite patterns.

The memorial archway in Yuan Lin is also a major feature. Instead of using the traditional Chinese brick-wood structure, it is built with reinforced concrete and gravel, which is very special. On both sides of the memorial archway, white marble pillar balusters and stone statues stand facing each other. To the north is the stele pavilion, with three bays in width. Inside the pavilion lies a huge stone carving of a Bixi.

On it is a tombstone as high as 5.5 meters. Several coiled dragons are carved on the tombstone, showing the extraordinary status of the tomb owner. On the front of the tombstone are several vigorous and upright regular script characters ‘Tomb of Yuan Gong Shikai’. After passing the stele pavilion is the gate. There is a main hall on the front and side halls on both sides. All are buildings in Qing Dynasty style.

Further ahead is the burial place of Yuan Shikai. The three iron doors are all in Western architectural style, but the tomb emblem on the door is carved with green dragons and fierce tigers. Yuan Shikai’s tomb is round and entirely cast with reinforced concrete. The stone lions carved around it also imitate the Western ‘realistic’ style instead of the traditional Chinese ‘freehand’ style. Yuan Shikai’s strange tomb also reflects his ever-changing status on the historical stage.
