Yuantong Temple is located in Tonglu County. It was first built in the 8th year of Zhenguan in the Tang Dynasty (634). It is one of the early Guanyin Buddhist shrines in China. Although there are many Yuantong Temples across the country, this one in Zhejiang Province is不得不提及. It is a large-scale Buddhist resort in the scenic area of two rivers and one lake (Xin’an River, Fuchun River and Qiandao Lake), and is known as the Putuo in western Zhejiang.

Today’s Yuantong Temple is newly built. However, due to its grand scale and long history, it still attracts continuous pilgrims to come and pray. The renovated temple has the graceful style of the south of the Yangtze River. The Buddhist halls are towering and the valleys are surrounded by greenery. It is worth mentioning that the bluestone archway standing in the direction of the main entrance of Yuantong Temple has overlapping eaves and is simple and unique.

The statue of the Eight Dharma Protectors guarding the gate is majestic and imposing with a mighty demeanor. Even more remarkable are the eight white marble stone pillars with coiled dragons in front of the Yuantong Treasure Hall. They are exquisitely carved, creating a majestic momentum of soaring into the clouds. The Thousand-Hand Guanyin statue in the Mahavira Hall is vivid and solemn and sacred.

Opening hours: Open from 7:00 to 17:00 all year round.
