Yue Wang Well, also known as Yue Wang Jing, is said to have been dug by Zhao Tuo, the King of Nanyue.
Located at the west end of Yingyuan Road in Guangzhou, Yue Wang Well is one of the oldest wells in the city.
It is traditionally believed that the well was originally in the shape of a square pool, over ten feet wide.
During the Song Dynasty, the county magistrate of Panyu, Yu Bogui, covered the well with large stone slabs and created nine well holes to facilitate water drawing, hence the name Nine-Eyed Well.
Today, a stone tablet inscribed with ‘Nine-Eyed Ancient Well’ still exists.
The well is open to the public all year round, with full-day access.
