Yuecheng Dragon Mother Ancestral Temple (Dragon Mother Temple)

The Dragon Mother Temple is located at the confluence of three rivers in Yuecheng Town, Deqing County, Guangdong Province, and is renowned both domestically and internationally for its profound Dragon Mother culture, ancient architectural culture, and historical culture. The temple, which dates back to the Qin and Han dynasties, has a history of over 2000 years. It was reconstructed during the 31st year of the Guangxu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, taking seven years to complete with the efforts of skilled craftsmen and master artists from the two Guang regions. It is known as one of the ‘Three Treasures’ of Lingnan ancient architecture, alongside Guangzhou’s Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and Foshan’s Ancestral Temple.
What is commendable about the Dragon Mother Temple is its exquisite architectural art. The temple’s structure is designed according to the characteristics of the water area: the pillars are exceptionally tall, the walls are built with water-polished blue bricks, covered with colored glaze tiles, and the floors inside and outside the temple are entirely paved with granite slabs. After the West River floods, the temple’s exterior streets are often knee-deep in mud, yet the temple remains clean and undamaged with minimal cleaning. Since its reconstruction in the 31st year of Guangxu, the temple has withstood floods and thunderstorms without any wall cracks, ground subsidence, pest damage, or lightning strikes, making it a marvel in architectural history.

The ‘Dragon Mother culture’ is a worship of motherhood, and its ‘truth, goodness, and beauty’ guide the people living, multiplying, and developing on this vast land of the Xijiang River basin. It is this culture that allows the general public to find their cultural roots deep within their hearts. During the temple fair, believers from all over the country gather at the Yuecheng Dragon Mother Ancestral Temple.

In the process of worship, they all follow an ancient procedure. Devout followers usually go to the Longquan to wash with holy water before entering the temple, symbolizing the washing away of worldly dust and impurities, which is essential before offering sacrifices to the holy Dragon Mother. Then they proceed with lighting incense, presenting offerings, kneeling and bowing in worship, praying, burning gold and silver paper, and finally setting off firecrackers to welcome the deities’ acceptance, marking the end of the entire ritual.
